Pierced World Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Perfect Body Jewellery

At Pierced World, we know that selecting body jewellery can be a bit daunting, especially if you're new to the world of piercings. This guide will help you understand how to choose the right piece for your piercing, ensuring a perfect fit, feel, and style. We'll also explain why choosing a reputable supplier like Pierced World is crucial for high-quality and reliable body jewellery.

  1. Determine the Placement

Whether you're already pierced or considering a new piercing, knowing the exact placement is crucial. Different placements, such as nose piercings, tragus, or daith, have specific requirements for jewellery. For example, a high nostril piercing may not accommodate traditional nose rings, and tragus and daith piercings require different types of jewellery. Identifying your piercing's exact location helps you choose jewellery that fits perfectly and looks great.

Check out our Piercing Locations guide for more detailed guidance.

  1. Choose the Right Size

Choosing the right size Jewellery is very important to ensure a safe, secure and comfortable fit. There are a few things to take in to consideration with choosing the right size body jewellery and some terminology which we think you will find useful.

Gauge:

Gauge refers to the thickness of the body jewellery. While some stores use "ga" measurements, most list the gauge in millimetres (mm). Common gauges include:

  • 1.6mm (14ga): Belly, tongue, and nipple piercings
  • 1.2mm (16ga): Cartilage, septum, and eyebrow piercings
  • 1.00mm (18ga): Lobe and nostril piercings

That being said there is a large range of gauges especially when dealing with items such as barbell piercings.

Jewellery Size:

Size typically refers to the length of the bar. For instance, a 10mm dermal anchor is unsuitable for piercings 12mm apart. Ensure the length of your jewellery matches your piercing’s dimensions for a comfortable fit. There is a wide range of lengths in jewellery which should ensure you can find the correct size for your body.

  1. Choose Safe Materials

Opt for bio-compatible materials to avoid skin irritation and reactions. Safe options include:

  • Surgical Stainless Steel: Durable and often used for surgical body jewellery.
  • Titanium: Lightweight and hypoallergenic.
  • Gold: High-quality and suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Glass: Non-reactive and stylish.

Avoid materials like silver or plated jewellery, which can cause reactions or corrosion.

Check out our Material Guide for more in depth information.

  1. Understand Body Jewellery Fixings

Body jewellery comes with various fixing mechanisms, each offering different benefits, here are just a few examples:

  • Internally Threaded: Jewellery with threads inside the bar, ensuring a smooth, irritation-free surface. Ideal for sensitive piercings.
  • Threadless: Uses a push-fit system with no visible threads. Easy to change and often preferred for its seamless look.
  • Externally Threaded: Threads on the outside of the bar. These can sometimes be less comfortable, as the threads are exposed to the piercing.
  • Hinged: Features a hinged closure for easy insertion and removal. Commonly used for hoops and clickers.

Understanding these fixings will help you choose jewellery that fits your needs and preferences.
